5 points you should know about baby feet before buying shoes.
Fact or Fiction?
1. Shoes help babies learn to walk.
FICTION. Being barefoot is best. Shoes make it difficult for your child's foot to bend, which in turn makes it harder for her to develop balance and coordination. The only real reason kids should wear shoes is to protect their feet from injury and cuts.
2. Infants need hard-soled shoes to protect their delicate feet and keep them properly aligned.
FICTION. Babies use their toes to grip the surfaces that they're walking on, so they should actually go shoeless indoors. To keep baby feet safe outside, get a shoe with a good grip on the sole.
3. Most babies have flat feet.
FACT. Over 97 % of babies have flat feet due to a thick fat pad on the soles of their feet. Arches develop as muscles strengthen, usually after age two.
4. Baby feet hardly sweat.
FICTION. Baby feet exert a lot of energy, when standing and balancing. This causes baby feet to get very hot. The temperature inside a shoe can reach even 120 °. That is why i tis important to buy breathable shoes. The best for baby feet are shoes made of natural leather or natural fibers like cotton.
5. Babies are born with only 22 bones in each foot.
FACT. At birth, a child's feet have only 22 partially formed bones. With time each foot will have 26 fully formed bones - but not until age 18! Now you can see why choosing a child’s footwear is so important!
